For people who aren’t too familiar with security cameras it may be a bit daunting when trying to pick the right one for you.

Whether you already own a SmartCam or are just getting familiar with it, you have most likely turned to Google for your answers. Upon doing so you will find that there is not much information that compares all of the SmartCams and just lays everything out there. Therefore this post will cover all the Samsung SmartCams (SNH-1011, SNH-6411/6413, SNH-P6410BN and SNH-E6440BN) and will serve as the ultimate guide if you are trying to determine which one is right for you.

Before diving into the cameras, you first need to consider these 5 questions before choosing an IP Camera:

  1. What are you using your IP Camera for?
  2. Is it going to be used indoors or outdoors?
  3. How important is video storage to you? And are you willing to pay a monthly subscription fee?
  4. What is your overall budget?
  5. What specific features are you looking for?

The most important step in choosing an IP camera is all about figuring out exactly what you need and are looking for.  But whether you’re intending on using it as a petcam, baby monitor or just general surveillance, there is a SmartCam that can be optimized for each purpose.

Let’s start off with our most popular IP Camera, which is none other than …

SNH-P6410 SmartCam HD Pro.

1080p Full HD streaming video – One of the most important features in this camera is the 1080p Full HD resolution. The quality of the picture is pretty clear and it allows you to see your video in great detail and is optimized for indoor use. One thing to note here is that while it does stream in 1080p, it does record in 720p resolution. But nonetheless the quality of this camera is the best you’re going to get out of all the SmartCams that are mentioned in this blogpost.

Advanced Motion & Audio Detection – With this feature you will be sent push notifications on your mobile device when the camera detects a significant event, like someone entering the room. Most importantly, it can record these moments so you’ll be able to look at what happened.

Local Video Storage – Unlike other competitors like DropCam Pro or NestCam, there is no monthly subscriptions fee for cloud storage. I have found that this is usually one of the deciding factors that draw people towards buying a SmartCam since it comes with a MicroSD card slot. With a 64GB capability, you can choose whether you want continuous recording, scheduled times for recording or recording when there is motion and sound events.

There are plenty of other features that come with the SNH-P6410BN; one being the WDR function (Wide Dynamic Range) that is not available on other models. This function basically allows you to record videos with more detail in poor lighting and you can really tell the difference when you’re utilizing this function.

Conclusion: The SNH-P6410BN can be used as a baby monitor, petcam or for general security purposes. On the other hand, it is understandable to have reservations with using it as a baby monitor since you always need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order for it to work. Some people don’t really mind this much and actually prefer using an IP camera in place of a baby monitor, so it really is a matter of preference. For all three of these options, the SNH-P6410 seems to be the ideal route to go since it has all the necessary features one would need.

SmartCam HD SNH-E6411/SNH-E6413

SNH-E6413BMR SmartCam HD

In case you were wondering what the difference between these two models is, let me clear that up – SNH-E6413 comes with a MicroSD Card feature that allows you to record footage, while the SNH-E6411 does not. So your best bet, if recording footage is something of importance to you, would be going with the 6413 since it comes included with a 16GB memory card.

1080p Full HD Streaming – Just like SNH-P6410, this camera allows you to stream at 1080p and records at 720p. This model is cheaper ($109 for refurbished) than the 6410 so if you’re on a budget then this isn’t a bad option.

Motion & Audio Detection – The motion and audio detection on this model works great and you can even select up to 3 zones of the area you are monitoring and will be alerted if there is movement in those zones.

Local Video Storage – Unlike the SNH-P6410, which has up to 64GB storage capacity, the SNH-6413 has up to 32 GB storage. If you’re someone who wants the option to have recording available, but doesn’t need a whole lot of memory storage then the SNH-E6413 would be a good fit especially if you’re on a budget. Additionally, the SNH-6413 comes included with a 16GB memory card which makes it more convenient and affordable.

Conclusion: Besides the design of the camera and some tweaks in the features, SNH-6413 isn’t too different than the SNH-6410. The more popular option for consumers has been the SNH-6410, however if you’re someone who is looking for a cheaper alternative and will be using it primarily for general monitoring then the SNH-6413 is the right choice for you.

SmartCam SNH-1011

SmartCam SNH-1011

This SmartCam has been out for a while now and we find that people are still turning to this model despite newer SmartCams being released. This is largely due to how affordable this camera is, retailing at $44 for a refurbished model.

Simple Set-Up – To set-up SNH-1011 you just have to connect the camera to your router and push the button on the back of the camera. Once you register your camera online either through the SmartCam app on your mobile phone or desktop, you’re all set. Granted the set-up for all of these SmartCams are pretty much the same, but if you’re just getting into the whole IP camera world then the SNH-1011 wouldn’t be a bad camera to get your foot in the door.

Other features this camera comes with are:

  • Built in mic and speaker for two-way talk
  • Audio and motion detection + notification
  • Night vision up to 16 ft.
  • Monitor on PC, MAC and smartphones

Conclusion: As you can see this SmartCam is not too packed with features like the 6410 or 6413, but if you just need the basics for general surveillance then these features are pretty much all you need. Since SNH-1011 is an older model and doesn’t include newer features, it is definitely recommended to monitor your pet or maybe even your room from time to time. Not everyone needs a fancy and expensive IP camera.

 SmartCam SNH-E6440BN Outdoor Camera

SNH-E6440BN SmartCam Outdoor Camera

As you can tell by the name of this model, the SNH-E6440 is designed for outdoor use since it comes with an IP66 weather-resistant camera. It is not recommended to use this camera indoors as the quality of the image will not be as clear as when you use it outside.

The features that come with this camera are very similar to the other Samsung SmartCams, but there are a few features that differentiate this model from others:

1080p Full HD Streaming – This outdoor IP camera streams in 1080p full HD quality, but it records videos at 720p. If you test the quality of the images taken both indoors and outdoors, you can see that images taken outdoors are far more vibrant and crisp. So if you were thinking that maybe you could use this camera interchangeably it is definitely possible, but not recommended since your images may not be as clear.

Night Vision – Because this camera is designed for outdoor use, the night vision on this camera allows you to see up to 50 feet. If you want surveillance around your home, then night vision is obviously something to really consider since you want to be able to see details in case anything does happen.

Dual-Component Design – As you can see this model comes with two components. The camera comes attached with a 25 foot cable and is meant for being placed outside, while the Wi-Fi adapter stays inside your home close to your router. The design of the camera itself is very small and compact, which is a huge bonus.

Conclusion: The SNH-E6440BN IP camera is clearly made for outdoor surveillance. We also have a more detailed product review of this camera here to check out.

So now that we briefly went over the basic features of all 4 SmartCams available here’s a chart that will hopefully help you better see the differences between them.
